Forklift truck company spreads its wings

A Washington-based company has confirmed its expansion plans after successfully upgrading its quality management system with the support of Absolute Quality Consultancy & Training.

Pegasus Materials Handling is a leading provider of material handling equipment in the North East and supplies an extensive range of new and used forklift trucks for purchase and hire to the manufacturing, logistics and building sectors.

The family-run company, set up in 1995 by Bob Wilson, initially operated from a van with industrial premises following soon after. Bob’s son Leon was then brought into the business as an apprentice engineer and has since progressed to General Manager and now leads on the day-to-day running of the business.

The company is now planning to expand its customer base and supply chain following its successfully upgrade to the latest version of the quality management standard ISO 9001.

The upgrade means that they have been recognised for their commitment to following best practice principles in quality and clearly demonstrates that they are continually monitoring and managing risks across the whole business and that staff have a clear understanding of their roles and the expected quality of their work.

Bob said: “We have always had the highest quality standards in place to provide customer satisfaction and enable us to compete with our international competitors. However, we must continue to ensure we have systems and processes in place that can react to changes that naturally occur in an ever-changing political and commercial environment.

“Absolute Quality took an in-depth look at the business and created a range of systems, from updating job descriptions and policies to streamlining our processes, while meeting the criteria of the standards. We are now in a position to share the workload across the business allowing us to spread our wings and explore further business development opportunities.”

The company’s commitment to continuous improvement and superior service has attracted partnerships from international manufacturers Jungheinrich, Manitou and Aisle-master, and will see the continued sustainability of the company as they broaden its customer base.

Lora Wilson, consultant at Absolute Quality Consultancy & Training, said: “It’s been a pleasure working with Bob and the team at Pegasus Material Handling and helping them to position the company to open up opportunities and lift their reputation further as a quality supplier of material handling equipment.”

As well as being accredited to ISO 9001:2015, Pegasus Materials Handling are also active members of The Forklift Truck Association and are accredited Consolidated Fork Truck Services (CFTS) Examiners.

Bob continued: “Absolute Quality have become integral to our team – it was difficult for us to focus on developing the processes as we were so busy with our daily activities. As well as being brilliant at developing management systems, Lora is terrific at getting things done; if it was left to us it wouldn’t have made it this far!

“The improved systems and processes we have in place have shaped the way we are operating the business and are the driving force behind our plans to reach new heights of success.”
